How to Avoid (and Fix) These Summer Beauty Sins

One minute you’re sipping rosé without a care in the world, and the next minute you’re waking up with bug bites, puffy eyes, frizzy hair, and sunburned skin. We’ve all been there. Here’s how to avoid (and emergency-fix) these common Fourth of July beauty fails.

BEFORE THE CELEBRATION…

Fourth of July Beauty Sin: Going heavy on moisturizer.

To prepare for a long day in the heat, “switch up your facial-moisturizing products. I always recommend not using anything too heavy or creamy for summer,” says Sir John, a L’Oréal Paris celebrity makeup artist. He recommends a lightweight moisturizing lotion. If your skin is on the oily side, just skip directly to step two (sunscreen), a must for anyone spending time outdoors. “Use an SPF 50-plus broad-spectrum sunscreen. Reapply after two hours as a rule, but if you go in the water, reapply as soon as you come out,” says dermatologist Vermén Verallo-Rowell, the founder of VMV Hypoallergenics.
